It All Begins Here
Step 1
A parent or carer contacts Play First and shares some basic information about their child and what has led them to seek support
Step 2
Play First reviews the referral. If play therapy is considered appropriate, you’ll receive the necessary intake, consent and service forms to complete.
Step 3
Once your forms are complete, we’ll arrange an initial parent consultation. This appointment is held without your child. It gives us time to understand your child, their experiences, strengths and needs.
Step 4
Your child begins regular individual play therapy sessions. The therapist provides a safe, consistent and accepting therapeutic environment and follows your child’s lead — without directing or interpreting their play. Across sessions, the therapist tracks your child’s play, reflects feelings, supports choice and responsibility, and provides therapeutic limits when needed.
Step 5
Parent consultations are scheduled throughout the therapeutic process. These provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s overall progress, share observations and explore ways to support them outside the playroom, while respecting the privacy of their therapeutic sessions.
Step 6
As your child progresses, we’ll review their therapeutic journey together. When they are ready, termination is thoughtfully planned rather than therapy simply stopping. This gives your child time to prepare for and experience a supported ending to the therapeutic relationship.
